Wine made easy while at home – Part 1
Making wine easy and enjoyable is what we’re all about. With that in mind, we’ve created a short series of tips to ensure you’re able to get the maximum amount of enjoyment our of your wine drinking, with the minimum amount of fuss… even while on lock down.
To kick off, let’s chat about the best temperature to serve your wine at…
LESSON 1: A TIME TO CHILL
This is most certainly a time to chill… in every sense of the word. Making time to unwind after a full day spent almost going crazy at home is as essential (and easy) as finally laying hold of that bottle of wine you’ve been eyeing all afternoon. But oh no! You forgot to stick it in the fridge earlier.
Here’s how to keep your cool and chill it down, fast:
Wrap the bottle in a wet cloth and stick it in your freezer for 10-15 minutes.
Alternatively, if you have a lot of ice on hand, place your bottle in an ice bucket (or anything tall and wide enough to hold the bottle and some ice). Fill it with ice and add a generous handful of salt (yes, salt). Give the bottle a twist to distribute the salt, and leave to chill for a few minutes. It should be ice cold in no time. Speaking of ice…
Can and should you add ice to your wine?
Look, unless you drink your wine very fast (no judgement here) the ice will melt and negatively effect the taste of the wine. That being said, many people enjoy their white or rosé a little diluted by ice. My personal opinion: do whatever you want as long as it makes you happy!
If you like the chilled effect of ice in wine but don’t fancy drinking diluted wine, pop a few grapes in your freezer instead, then put them in your glass of wine. They’ll keep the wine ice-cold, without adding any water to your wine.
What’s the ideal temperature for wine anyway?
The perfect drinking temperature for Red Wines is 12˚C > 18˚C, for White Wines and Rose, 8˚C > 12˚C and Champagne, Bubbly or Dessert Wine is best enjoyed between 5˚C and 7˚C.
Why bother getting the temps right you ask?
Well, because it really does effect the taste of wine. Too cold, and the flavours will be tightly wound up, too warm and the wine will be loose and limp.
