The rise of the regions!

Making world-class wine isn’t anything new for SA’s top wine estates, but creating world-recognised regions was certainly the next frontier. As a passionate believer in wine regionality, I set out to identify the Cape’s finest wine growing areas, and together with their winemakers, determine the signature wine or calling card for each of these regions…

Just five years ago, this was still a dream of mine, but today, with 5 incredible vintages from 3 of the Cape’s best wine regions in our Wade Bales Regional Series and on tables the world over, I can confidently attest that the reality is even better than I’d imagined it would be.

Platter’s most recent Wine Guide ratings are just the latest confirmation we’re doing something right – with 2 of the 3 wines scoring the ultimate recognition of 5 stars, whilst the third scored an impressive 4.5 stars or 94 points.

Perhaps the success of the Regional Series has to do with our singular goal: in every region, we have sought to select the finest sites, passionate winemakers with long and respected track records, and their very best barrels. Then together with these all-important components, create a seamless blend that definitively represents the signature style of that region. By so doing, we hope to create proudly regional wines that compete and compare with the finest examples of their kind, from anywhere in the world.

Acclaimed Cape Wine Master, Allan Mullins, had this to say about the Series:

For our wines to receive the worldwide recognition they truly deserve, our wine regions need to identify their unique strengths and play to them. The success of Wade’s Regional Series is confirmation that our regions have what it takes to compete with the best in the world.

The latest release in the Wade Bales Regional Series (and the second vintage for this region) winemakers from 9 of Constantia’s most renowned wine farms offered their finest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon to create another knock-out. Freshly clipped notes of citrus and lemon zest on the nose lead to a palate that more than delivers on rich complexity.

The third release in the Wade Bales Regional Series, and the first from this region, winemakers from 5 of the Breedekloof’s best known wine producers offered their finest Chenin Blanc barrels so that together, they could create a wine which best showcases the signature style of their region. Light lemon yellow in colour, the nose exudes the amazing fruit purity so typical of the Breedekloof. On the palate, expect a concentrated, fruity acidity backed up by well-integrated oak and good length too.

Five of Stellenbosch’s most accomplished winemakers have collaborated for the second year running to create yet another 5-star signature Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon. The aroma brims with sun raisined black berries and sweet tobacco, leading to a palate that seamlessly brings together the finest Stellenbosch terroirs.

What regions lie beyond? Perhaps a Chardonnay from Elgin or a Shiraz from the Swartland. Watch this space…
